National Foundation Medal awarded to American Mrs. Peach for helping Kim Gu and others escape

An American woman who helped Kim Gu and other officials of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea flee from Japanese imperialism and supported Korea‘s independence will receive an award for meritorious service on the 80th anniversary of liberation.

The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs announced on the 13th that among the 311 independence activists being honored this year on the 80th anniversary of liberation, Mrs. Geraldine Townsend Peach (1892-1976) will receive the Order of National Foundation (Independence Medal).

Mrs. Peach was the wife of missionary George Ashmore Peach (1883-1979), who received the Independence Medal in 1968. In April 1932, shortly after Yoon Bong-gil‘s assassination attempt at the Hongkou Park in Shanghai, China, the couple sheltered Kim Gu, Eom Hang-seop, Ahn Gong-geun (Ahn Jung-geun’s younger brother), and Kim Cheol, key figures of the provisional government, at their home for about a month. As Japanese police surveillance tightened, she helped them escape to Jiaxing by disguising them as Chinese nationals.

Mrs. Peach pretended to be Kim Gu‘s wife to evade Japanese surveillance. The details of the Peach couple’s assistance are recorded in “Baekbeom Ilji.” While Mr. Peach, her husband, was recognized for his contributions early on, Mrs. Peach‘s assistance was not widely known. Mrs. Peach also translated Kim Gu‘s “The Truth About the Hongkou Park Incident” into English and, after returning to the United States, served as president of the New York branch of the Korea-America Association in the 1940s, giving speeches in support of Korea’s independence movement. The Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs explained the background of the award, saying, “We judged that Mrs. Peach‘s contributions were no less than those of her husband.”

Among the 311 recipients of this award, 71 received the Order of National Foundation (2 Independence Medals, 13 Patriot Medals, and 56 Patriotic Medals), 22 received the Order of National Foundation Medal, and 218 received the Presidential Citation.

Mr. Kim Sul-geun (Patriotic Order), who led the independence movement in Korea and the United States and volunteered for the U.S. military during the Pacific War, will also receive the Order of National Foundation. Six people, including the An Soon-pil family, who supported the independence movement in the distant region of Cuba, will receive the Presidential Citation.

A total of 18,569 people have been honored as independence activists since the establishment of the Republic of Korea until this year‘s Liberation Day.

김구 등 피신 도운 美 피치 여사에 건국훈장



김구를 비롯해 일제의 눈을 피해 쫓기던 대한민국임시정부 요인들을 피신시켜 주고 한국의 독립을 지지한 미국인이 광복 80주년을 맞아 독립유공자 포상을 받는다.

국가보훈부는 올해 광복 80주년을 계기로 포상하는 독립유공자 311명 가운데 제럴딘 타운센드 피치(1892~1976) 여사가 건국훈장(독립장)을 받는다고 13일 밝혔다.

피치 여사는 1968년 독립장을 받은 조지 애시모어 피치(1883~1979) 선교사의 부인으로, 두 사람은 1932년 4월 중국 상하이 훙커우 공원에서의 윤봉길 의거 직후 찾아온 김구, 엄항섭, 안공근(안중근 동생), 김철 등 임시정부 요인들을 약 한 달간 집에서 피신하게 해 줬다. 이후 일본 경찰의 감시망이 좁혀 오자 이들을 중국인으로 위장해 자싱으로 탈출할 수 있도록 도왔다.

피치 여사는 당시 김구의 부인인 척 위장해 일제의 감시를 피했다. ‘백범일지’에 당시 피치 부부의 도움을 받은 내용이 자세히 기록돼 있다. 남편인 피치 선교사는 이러한 공을 일찌감치 인정받았지만 피치 여사의 도움은 크게 알려지지 않았다.<서울신문 2024년 10월 7일자 11면>

피치 여사는 김구가 작성해 발표한 ‘훙커우 공원 투척 사건의 진상’ 영문 번역도 맡았고 미국으로 돌아간 뒤에도 1940년대 한미협회 뉴욕지부 회장으로 활동하며 한국의 독립운동을 지지하는 연설을 하기도 했다. 보훈부는 “피치 부인의 공적도 남편의 공적과 다르지 않다고 판단했다”고 서훈 배경을 설명했다.

이번 포상 대상자 311명 가운데 건국훈장은 71명(독립장 2명·애국장 13명·애족장 56명), 건국포장은 22명, 대통령 표창은 218명이다.

국내와 미국에서 독립운동을 이끌고 태평양전쟁 기간 미군에 자원입대해 활약한 김술근 선생(애족장)도 건국훈장을 받는다. 머나먼 쿠바 지역에서 독립운동 지원 등의 활동을 했던 안순필 일가 등 6명은 대통령 표창을 받는다.

대한민국 정부 수립 이후 이번 광복절까지 총 1만 8569명이 독립유공자로 포상됐다.
